International Cricket Council clears controversial video system

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Players will be allowed to challenge close umpiring calls after the controversial video review system was cleared by the sport's governing body.

The experiment, allowing players a set number of unsuccessful challenges per innings, was trialled in four test series before it came up for review last month.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the review system on a permanent basis on the first day of its board meeting in London.

It will come into operation from October, so England and Australia players will not be able to challenge decisions during the Ashes series starting next month.

Opinions on the system have been mixed among players, television commentators and fans. There were concerns the authority of the umpires would be undermined, although the ICC said the positives far outweighed the negatives with more correct decisions being made

Jeev Milkha Singh still trails Olympic dad in popularity ratings

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Jeev Milkha Singh has claimed a host of international victories and risen to number 39 in the world rankings but he says he is still behind his father in the Indian popularity stakes.

Milkha Singh is a former Olympic sprinter and better known in his homeland than his golfing son.

"Wherever we walk he always jokes with me especially at the airports or train stations," Jeev told reporters after a second round 69 earned a tie for the lead with Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera on eight-under 136 at the European Open on Friday.

India celebrates long-awaited individual gold

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
India, the world's second-most populous country, celebrated its first individual Olympic gold medal on August 11 when Abhinav Bindra won the men's 10m air rifle.

Despite a population of around 1.1 billion people, India had only won four individual medals, none of them gold, since sending their first team to the Summer Games in 1928.

Bindra's victory was particularly sweet following the Indian men's hockey team's failure to qualify for the Games for the first time.

They have won the Olympic hockey tournament eight times and taken three other medals in the sport, though none since 1980.

Indian Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill said Bindra's performance would lift the success-starved country.

"This is going to give a huge incentive in going up further and becoming a dominant (sporting) power," he told Indian TV.
