Subroto Bhattacharya to head Zee operations in the Americas

Subroto Bhattacharya, currently Territory Head - Europe, is appointed the new Territory Head - Americas for Zee TV USA, looking after USA, Canada, Caribbean and Latin America after Venkat Subramanian decided to move on.

Bhattacharya is part of the senior management of the Zee Group and the current head of the European Business of the Zee Group.

Bhattacharya has been part of the Zee group since 1996 in India looking after advertising sales for the channel.

Commenting on this appointment, Bharat Kumar Ranga, COO of International Business was quoted in a press release, "Bringing Subro to on board for Americas operations has been a conscious and strategic decision to strengthen a very strong leadership team at Zee TV USA.

Sikh Heritage Gala and Annual Film Festival

The Sikh Art and Film Foundation held the Sikh Heritage Gala as well as the Annual Film Festival October 3 and 4.

Celebrated as part of the Sikh Heritage Week, the Annual Sikh Film Festival 2008 NYC, took place at the Asia Society and Museum, presenting a powerful and thought provoking lineup of films covering topics such as the post 9/11 racial profiling and hate crimes, the 1984 Sikh genocide, a contemporary look at the 1947 partition of India, and portraits of the 100-year history of Sikhs in America.

This year the Foundation presented a total of $15,000 in prize money to films that won in their respective genres, a press release said.

The audience voted Ekta Walia's Sikh, 'Rattle and Rol'l (UK) as the Best Children's Film with a prize of $2,500. 'Kabaddi Cop's (Canada) was chosen as the best Short Film with a prize of $3,500, and Preetmohan Singh's 'A Dream in Doubt' (USA) was the Best Documentary with a grand prize of $6,000.

Lineup of superstars along with Bollywood heart throbs - the Bachchan family

The Unforgettable Tour 2008', was at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on August 9.

Produced and directed by Wizcraft, the show, an 11-city tour, choreographed by Shiamak Davar, featured Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh, Shekhar Ravijani and Vishal Dadlani.

"It was a sold-out show," Bharat Jothwani of Poonjanka Entertainment, one of the presenters, told Desi Talk. The seating capacity in the hall was 13,400 and according to Jothwani, more than thousand people had to be turned away for lack of space.

"This is an unparalleled, unforgettable show in the history of show business in North America. It was the best production ever."

The show was presented by Poojanka Entertainment, Victor Khubani and Dreamkakers.

5 New Yorkers among 9 South Asians on Committee

Preeta Bansal, former Solicitor General of New York State, and White House Special Counsel during the Clinton administration, and top venture capitalist Vinod Khosla are among nine South Asians inducted to the newly formed Asian American Finance Committee of the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama.

Bansal, who was also Chair of the U.S.Commission on International Religious Freedom, and Khosla who has been on the Forbes billionaires list several times, were named to the 15-member committee announced on July 8.

"We look forward to doing everything we can to elect Senator Obama in November," Khosla said in the press release.

"From ending the war in Iraq and restoring America's standing abroad, to promoting innovation and working toward a comprehensive energy independence plan, from restoring the balance between civil liberties and national security, to ensuring all Americans have access to high quality, affordable healthcare, Senator Obama has consistently shown that he is the right choice not just for Asian-Americans, but for all Americans."

Hello Obama, good luck next time Hillary

Some call it epic, others call it historic and yet others call it thrilling. As for me, this certainly was the most exciting presidential primary elections I have witnessed since my arrival here in 1962. Sadly it is now over. Why sadly? Because I wanted the mehfil to last a lot longer to add some mirch masala to my mundane political meals.

She will still continue to be one of the most powerful and influential women in America as a Senator. But the White House sleep overs are now behind her. If she ever gets to sleep there again, it has to be as a guest of the next president. Or, as a mother of the future president named Chelsea Clinton.

How about the so-called dream ticket of Obama and Hillary as his running mate for vice president? It's possible, but only in her dreams according to my crystal ball. How can I say that, you ask, since so many media mavens and political prognosticators are still salivating on that prospect?
