New York-based musician Falguni Shah, better known as Falu, is set to release her upcoming album “Foras Road,” May 28. Produced by Grammy-award winning producer Danny Blume, “Foras Road,” refers to the Mumbai’s oldest red-light district and traverses the musical traditions and cultural history of India's centuries-old brothels, according to a press release. Falu sings in seven South Asian languages throughout the album, blending Indian classical and folk music with her own original compositions and adding modern instrumentation. The album was recorded partly in India with some South Asian musicians, and partly with her band at Blume’s studios in upstate New York, the release said.  Talking about her song “Ghumar,” which premiered on The Huffington Post on May 7, Falu says Ghumar is a type of fancy dress worn in the state of Rajasthan and the song, in Rajasthani, celebrates the fact that a girl is finally attaining womanhood.

Now fans can experience the singer, composer and songwriter move across the stage and groove to his songs. The 43-year-old singer is currently touring North America and promises his fans that the concert tour will be “one of a kind.” The tour will feature many of Sami’s non-film songs, including the popular “Roya,” from his new album “Press Play,” but the highlight of the show will be the star himself. Now, 253 lbs lighter, the singer, composer and song-writer says he’s all set to rock his fans. Students from Afghanistan's only music academy brought the war-torn country's rhythms to the State Department on Monday as part of their first U.S. tour, with brand-new Secretary John Kerry recalling his rock roots for the musicians. The tour by the 48 musicians from the Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM) will include performances on Thursday at Washington's Kennedy Center and next week at New York's Carnegie Hall. Organizers said the visit by the musicians ages 10 to 22, many of them orphans or street children, was aimed at improving Afghanistan's image after more than a decade of fighting between U.S.-led forces and the Taliban. "The major objective of the trip is to change the perception of Afghanistan, to show the public the ... positive changes that are most of the time overlooked or (hidden) behind the violence, the roadside bombings," ANIM head Ahmad Sarmast told Reuters.

Two Indian-American college students from Maryland and Michigan could be well on their way to becoming the next American Idol. Gurpreet Singh Sarin, 22, from Potomac, Md., and Shubha Vedula, 17, from Great Plaines, Mich., were among 40 contestants who advanced to the nest round.  Now Vedula and Sarin will compete for the top 20 spot in the auditions to be held in Las Vegas, Nev., where contestants will perform in front of a live audience.  This will also be the first time they will be judged by an audience poll. In the solo round during Hollywood week on Feb. 14, Vadula, dressed in a simple silver gown, performed a cover of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s “When You Believe.” At the California auditions aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Vedula performed in front of only two judges out of the four as Mariah Carey was stuck in Los Angeles traffic and Nicki Minaj had a prior engagement.
